Perched at 7,985 feet on Mount Harkness in Lassen Volcanic National Park near Mineral, California, this fire lookout tower exemplifies the National Park Service rustic aesthetic that defined such structures in the early twentieth century. Built in 1931, the tower comprises a fifteen-foot stone base supporting a matching wooden cab with log catwalk and railings—a compact yet functional design refined through NPS experience. Staffed seasonally during summer months, it once served as one of fewer than forty operating NPS fire lookouts remaining in the country by 2019, though the structure was destroyed during the Dixie Fire of July–August 2021. The tower was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2017.
