The Mull of Kintyre Lighthouse, completed in 1788 on Mull of Kintyre in Argyll and Bute, was the second lighthouse commissioned in Scotland by the Commissioners of the Northern Lights. Designed and built by Thomas Smith—who had previously worked on the light at Kinnaird Head—this 12-metre tower represented a far more ambitious and remote undertaking than his earlier project. Rebuilt in the 1820s, the lighthouse originally produced a fixed light until 1906, when it was converted to flashing and its power dramatically increased from 8,000 to 281,000 candelas. The station transitioned to electrical power in 1976 and was automated in 1996, now monitored remotely from Edinburgh. A category A listed building, the lighthouse stands as a significant piece of Scottish maritime heritage; its former keeper's cottages are now operated as holiday accommodations by the National Trust for Scotland.
