Napier is a beachside city on the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, located in the Hawke's Bay region with a population of approximately 66,400. The city is renowned for its extensive Art Deco architecture, complemented by some Spanish Mission style buildings, most of which were constructed in the 1930s following the devastating 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake that destroyed much of the original city. Its picturesque esplanade, lined with Norfolk pines and known for a sunny climate, has earned Napier the romantic epithet "Nice of the Pacific." Beyond its architectural heritage, Napier functions as a major economic hub—home to the Southern Hemisphere's largest wool centre and serving as the primary export seaport for northeastern New Zealand's abundant apple, pear, stone fruit, and timber production. The city's Art Deco attractions, including the iconic Pania statue on Marine Parade, draw thousands of tourists annually, particularly during the Tremains Art Deco Weekend festival each February.
