Dedicated to Mary, Queen of Peace, in Neviges (Velbert, North Rhine-Westphalia), this pilgrimage church was designed by Gottfried Böhm and consecrated in 1968. Built in bold brutalist style from concrete, it replaced a 1728 church that had grown too small for the expanding number of pilgrims visiting the site—a destination of devotion since 1676. The building's striking irregular roof and forum-like interior became Böhm's signature work and a landmark of twentieth-century spatial design. It ranks as the second largest church in the Diocese of Cologne and the second largest north of the Alps. The structure stands as a recognized architectural heritage monument in North Rhine-Westphalia.
