Located at 180–200 Bellevue Avenue in Newport, Rhode Island, the Newport Casino is an athletic complex and recreation center built in 1879–1881 for New York Herald publisher James Gordon Bennett, Jr. Designed by the newly formed architectural firm McKim, Mead & White in the Shingle style, it was the firm's first major commission and instrumental in establishing their national reputation. Originally conceived as a social club, the complex featured courts for lawn tennis and court tennis alongside facilities for squash and lawn bowling, reading rooms, card rooms, billiards areas, shops, and a convertible theater and ballroom. The casino became a focal point of Newport's Gilded Age social life through the 1920s and was the site of the earliest American lawn tennis championships. Since 1954, it has housed the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987.
