Brisbane's oldest surviving residence, Newstead House occupies a picturesque site on the Breakfast Creek bank of the Brisbane River in the suburb of Newstead. Originally constructed as a small Colonial-Georgian cottage in 1846 for Patrick Leslie and his wife Catherine, the house was sold the following year to John Clements Wickham, the Police Magistrate and Government Resident, who married into the McArthur family. The cottage was subsequently extended and redecorated in the late Victorian style, which defines its appearance today. The property was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992.
