Perched atop Mount Gros in Nice, France, the Nice Observatory is an astronomical facility founded in 1879 by banker Raphaël Bischoffsheim. The structure was designed by architect Charles Garnier, with Gustave Eiffel contributing the engineering for the main dome. The observatory gained international prominence in 1886 when it unveiled the Grand Lunette, the world's largest refracting telescope at that time, which used an objective lens rather than a mirror. Today classified as a historical monument and part of France's twentieth-century heritage, the observatory stands as a significant example of nineteenth-century scientific architecture.
