Situated in the Viennese suburb of Nußdorf where the Donaukanal diverges from the Danube, this pair of hydraulic structures—a weir and a lock—were designed by Otto Wagner and built following legislation enacted in July 1892 that also authorized the Vienna Stadtbahn and the transformation of the Donaukanal into a winter harbour. Though often conflated, the weir and lock are distinct constructions serving complementary purposes. Wagner's treatment of these utilitarian works exemplifies Art Nouveau architecture, demonstrating the movement's embrace of engineering as a subject worthy of aesthetic refinement.
