The Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre is the oldest theatre in Odesa, Ukraine, and ranks among the city's most celebrated landmarks alongside the Potemkin Stairs. An original opera house opened here in 1810 but was destroyed by fire in 1873. The current building was constructed by the Viennese architectural firm Fellner & Helmer and opened in 1887, featuring a neo-baroque exterior in the Vienna Baroque style. The luxurious interior audience hall reflects late French rococo aesthetics and is distinguished by its horseshoe design, which creates exceptional acoustics allowing even whispered tones from the stage to carry clearly throughout the auditorium. The theatre underwent its most recent renovation in 2007.
