The Donetsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, established in 1932 in Donetsk on the basis of a fit-up theatre from Right-bank Ukraine, opened its first season on September 1 with Alexander Borodin's *Prince Igor*. Architect Ludvig Ivanovich Kotovsky designed the new theatre building, which opened on April 12, 1941, with a premiere of Mikhail Glinka's *Ivan Susanin*; the theatre's inaugural ballet performance, Alexander Crain's *Laurencia*, followed that August. The company was evacuated during the Great Patriotic War, relocating to Kirghizia and later Przhevalsk, where performers gave concerts for hospitals and military units until returning to Donetsk in 1944. The theatre achieved Academic status in 1977 and was named after Soviet Ukrainian opera singer Anatoliy Solovyanenko in 1999. Since 1994, it has hosted the International Festival "World Ballet Stars," associated with the Choreographic School established there in 1992.
