Designed by Polish architect Zygmunt Gorgolewski and constructed between 1897 and 1900, the Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet stands on Freedom Avenue in Lviv's historic Old City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built on former marshland of the submerged Poltva River during Lviv's time as capital of the autonomous Galician province within the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the opera house exemplifies eclectic and Renaissance Revival architecture. Originally known as the Grand Theatre of the Second Polish Republic and later renamed after poet Ivan Franko, it was designated in 2000 as the Solomiya Krushelnytska Lviv State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, honouring the celebrated early twentieth-century soprano.
