Designed by Jan Wils in the Amsterdam School style, the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam served as the principal venue for the 1928 Summer Olympics and originally held 31,600 spectators. Following the completion of Rotterdam's De Kuip stadium in 1937, the structure was expanded with a second ring that nearly doubled its capacity to 64,000. After Ajax relocated to the newly completed Amsterdam Arena in 1996, the stadium underwent extensive renovation that restored it to its 1928 configuration, removing the added ring and reducing capacity to 22,288 while reestablishing its suitability for track and field events. Now a Rijksmonument, the stadium continues to host athletics competitions, sports events, and concerts, and has housed the Olympic Experience Amsterdam sports museum since 2005.
