Completed in 1931 and located at the corner of Clinton Avenue and North Pearl Street in downtown Albany, New York, the Palace Theatre is an Art Deco entertainment venue designed by John Eberson, a celebrated theatre architect renowned for his atmospheric auditorium designs. Originally built as an RKO-owned facility, the theatre features ornate Austrian Baroque interior elements, including an impressive brass chandelier in the main lobby, original murals by Hungarian artists Andrew Karoly and Louis Szanto, and plaster beams in the fore-lobby painted to resemble carved wood. Though modifications have occurred over the decades, the Palace has retained most of its original design features. Now operated by the Palace Performing Arts Center, Inc., a nonprofit organization established in 1984, the venue hosts over 150 annual events ranging from concerts and ballet to Broadway productions and comedy, and serves as home to the Grammy Award-winning Albany Symphony Orchestra. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and designated a contributing property to the Clinton Avenue Historic District in 1988.
