In the Umbrian town of Todi stands Palazzo del Popolo, a Gothic civic palace erected between 1213 and 1228, making it one of the earliest structures of its kind in the region. Also known as Palazzo del Priori or Podesta, the building's most distinctive feature is its monumental wide staircase, added in 1267 by Podestà Pandolfo Savelli, which serves as a bridge leading into the main council chamber. The orientation of its principal facade was established during the 16th century, while the 19th century brought extensive refurbishment that included the addition of crenellations to the rooflines of two buildings flanking the piazza. The palazzo remains a protected monument of Italian national heritage.
