In Cividale del Friuli, northern Italy, the Palazzo Pretorio (also known as Palazzo dei Provveditori veneti) stands as a Renaissance palace attributed to Andrea Palladio and built between 1565 and 1586. The project originated from the Civic Council's desire, expressed in 1559, to construct a grand civic palace, though the foundation stone was not laid until March 1565 when funds became available. Renaissance historian Giorgio Vasari documented that Palladio prepared a model for the building and attended its foundation ceremony. The palace was completed in 1586, though Palladio's design influence remains somewhat obscured in the final structure, likely owing to execution undertaken without his direct oversight. The building's distinctive rusticated basement, featuring stone bosses, may reflect Palladio's studies of Roman antiquities in Dalmatia, particularly the amphitheatre in Pula. Since 1990, the palace has housed the National Archeological Museum of Cividale.
