Standing on the northeastern extremity of the Goulet de Brest in Brittany, the Phare du Portzic is an octagonal granite tower completed in 1848 as the nearest lighthouse to the town of Brest itself. Rising 35 metres, it was constructed on military land contemporaneously with the Phare du Petit Minou to the north, guarding the narrow seaward entrance to the goulet opposite the Pointe des Espagnols. The lighthouse was electrified in 1953 and automated in 1994, though a semaphore post established at its base in 1987 to manage traffic through the bottleneck remains staffed. Listed in France's general inventory of cultural heritage, it endures as a working aid to navigation.
