Standing 24 metres tall in the roadstead of Brest before the Fort du Petit Minou in Plouzané, the Petit Minou Lighthouse was built in 1848 to assist maritime navigation through the Goulet de Brest. Working in conjunction with the Phare du Portzic, it guides ships along the safe passage into the roadstead and emits a red signal warning of the dangerous submerged rocks known as les Fillettes. The lighthouse was added to the fortification—itself constructed between 1694 and 1697 as part of Vauban's celebrated defensive campaign—nearly a century and a half after the fort's completion. Now recognized as a selected monument in the national cultural heritage inventory, it remains an essential navigational marker in one of France's strategically significant coastal waters.
