The Point Amour Lighthouse stands on the shore of Forteau Bay in the Strait of Belle Isle on Labrador Peninsula, southern Newfoundland and Labrador. Completed in 1857 as part of a series of four lighthouses built in the 1850s to accommodate increased steamship traffic between Europe and North America, this cylindrical tower of limestone reaches 109 feet, making it the tallest lighthouse in Atlantic Canada and the second tallest in Canada overall. The stone was quarried locally, while timber and brick were shipped from Quebec, then transported four miles overland to the construction site. Painted white with a black band, the tower employs a second-order Fresnel lens at a focal plane of 152 feet above sea level. The adjacent residential quarters, also completed in 1857, have been renovated to serve as a museum. The lighthouse, designated a provincial historic site and federal heritage building, was automated in 1996; the site also preserves the foundations of a former Marconi Station.
