Perched on Point Reyes in Marin County, California, this cast-iron lighthouse was built in 1870 to guide ships through the Gulf of the Farallones. Standing just eleven meters tall, the structure sits within Point Reyes National Seashore and features a Fresnel lens and clockwork mechanism housed in its main Lens Room. Visitors descend approximately 300 steps to reach the lighthouse itself, weather permitting, to view the optical and mechanical apparatus that once warned mariners of the treacherous coastline. An adjacent Visitor Center provides context through exhibits on the lighthouse's history and the area's marine and natural heritage.
