Built in 1871, the Porter County Jail and Sheriff's House in Valparaiso is a Renaissance Revival structure that served multiple purposes across its history. Originally constructed as a combined jail and residential building for the county sheriff, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. From 1975 to 2020, the building housed the Porter County Museum, which had been founded in 1916 by the Porter County Historical Society to preserve the history and culture of Porter County, Indiana. The museum has since relocated to nearby Indiana Avenue, though the historic jail building remains a significant example of nineteenth-century civic architecture in Valparaiso.
