The Presidential Palace in Warsaw is the official residence of Poland's head of state, originally built as an aristocratic mansion in 1643 and substantially rebuilt in neoclassical style, completed in 1818 by architect Constantino Tencalla. The palace has hosted pivotal moments in European history: in 1791, it sheltered the authors of the Constitution of 3 May, Europe's first modern constitution, and from 1818 onward served as the seat of the Polish Viceroy under Congress Poland. Following Poland's independence after World War I, it became the seat of the Council of Ministers in 1918, and though commandeered as a German administrative building during the Nazi occupation, it survived the 1944 Warsaw Uprising intact. The palace regained its governmental role after the war and has been the official presidential residence since July 1994. It remains an immovable monument in Poland and shares the function of presidential residence with the Belweder Palace.
