The Produce Terminal Cold Storage Company Building, constructed in 1928–29 on Chicago's Near West Side, stands as a historic refrigerated warehouse designed by H. Peter Henschien and Robert J. McLaren. When it opened, this eleven-story Art Deco structure was the largest cold storage facility in Chicago, reflecting the city's critical role as a major shipping and transportation hub. The building's distinctive upper stories showcase extensive terra cotta and tile ornamentation, including chevrons, Egyptian-inspired colonettes, and a dentillated cornice with cymatium molding—hallmarks of the Art Deco style. Beyond its vast refrigerated storage capacity, the building integrated processing and office space, an innovative approach that enhanced efficiency and reduced operating costs for its tenants. The facility was essential to preserving perishable goods year-round in an era before widespread home refrigeration. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
