Qasr al-Harrana, one of the most prominent desert castles in eastern Jordan, stands about 60 kilometres east of Amman near the Saudi Arabian border. Built during the Umayyad Dynasty—an inscription on its upper wall dates it to before 710 CE—the structure may have replaced an earlier Greek or Byzantine dwelling on the site. Its precise function remains debated among scholars, with theories ranging from military stronghold and caravan rest stop to agricultural outpost, though current scholarly consensus suggests it served as a meeting place for local Bedouin leaders. This Islamic architectural monument exemplifies the distinctive desert palaces that characterized Umayyad rule in the Levant.
