Located on Tumen Street in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, the Qingjing Mosque is among China's oldest mosques, founded in 1009. Originally known as the Mosque of the Companions (Masjid al-Aṣḥāb in Arabic), it was dedicated to the Prophet Muhammad's companions who, according to Chinese Muslim tradition, traveled to Quanzhou and were buried nearby. The mosque is a rare architectural hybrid, blending Minnan Chinese style with Islamic design, and stands as the only example in mainland China of a stone entryway to a mosque. During the Song and Yuan periods, it served as a vital gathering place for the local Muslim community and a hub connecting regional merchants and scholars across Indian Ocean trade networks. Now recognized as both a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, the mosque preserves an original Arabic foundation inscription that documents its authentic historical name.
