The Quadrangle Dormitories at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia comprise 39 conjoined residence houses designed by the architectural firm Cope and Stewardson in an exuberant Neo-Jacobean interpretation of Collegiate Gothic style. Constructed between 1894 and 1912, the complex stretches across three city blocks from 36th to 38th Streets and from Spruce Street to Hamilton Walk, with buildings west of the Memorial Tower angling along the former Woodland Avenue to form a distinctive triangular footprint. Originally housing only male students from 1895 to 1971, the dormitories were recognized as a contributing property to the University of Pennsylvania Campus Historic District in 1978. Today the complex is organized into three college houses—Fisher Hassenfeld, Ware, and Riepe—which serve as first-year residential communities for approximately 1,445 students.
