The Quay with Sphinxes stands along the Universitetskaya Embankment in Saint Petersburg's Vasileostrovsky District, directly before the Imperial Academy of Arts. Completed in 1834, this pier exemplifies the Egyptian Revival style that captivated European imagination during the nineteenth century. Its most striking features are two ancient sphinxes imported from Egypt in 1832, during the height of Egyptomania, which now flank the embankment. Constructed of granite and bronze, the quay remains a federal cultural heritage site in Russia, blending Classicism with exotic Egyptian elements to create a distinctive landmark that reflects the cosmopolitan ambitions of imperial Saint Petersburg.
