Ranfurly is a service town in the Central Otago District, situated 110 kilometres north of Dunedin on the dry Maniototo plain at approximately 430 metres elevation. Named after the Fifth Earl of Ranfurly, who served as Governor of New Zealand from 1897 to 1904 during the extension of the Otago Central Railway to the region, the town replaced its former name, Eweburn, one of several farmyard place names assigned by Chief Surveyor John Turnbull Thomson. Ranfurly is distinguished by its notable Art Deco architecture, particularly exemplified in the town's hotel and dairy, which remain characteristic features of its streetscape.
