Rayen Citadel is a historic adobe fortress located in the city of Rayen, approximately 100 kilometers south of Kerman in Iran. Though believed to be at least 1,000 years old, the structure may have Sasanian-era foundations with subsequent additions and renovations spanning the Islamic period, reflecting influences from Sasanian, Safavid, and Qajar architectural traditions. Built from mudbrick, the citadel and its surrounding city exemplify hallmarks of Iranian fortress design and have survived numerous natural disasters that destroyed comparable structures elsewhere. The settlement served as a significant center on important trade routes, facilitating commerce in textiles and luxury goods as well as sword, knife, and later gun manufacturing, until its abandonment around 1868. The Arabs failed to capture the city during the reign of Yazdegerd III, reputedly because of its formidable walls. Today it stands as a well-preserved cultural property and popular tourist destination, with ongoing efforts to secure its UNESCO World Heritage listing.
