The Reichstag, located on Platz der Republik in Berlin, is the seat of the German Bundestag and meeting place of the Federal Convention. Constructed between 1884 and 1894 in the Tiergarten district on the left bank of the River Spree, this Neo-Renaissance structure was designed by architect Paul Wallot and built from granite, limestone, and sandstone. Originally housing the legislature of the German Empire and Weimar Republic, the building suffered severe damage in the 1933 Reichstag fire and further destruction during World War II. After serving temporary functions in the 1950s, it underwent fundamental redesign by Norman Foster from 1995 to 1999, blending its historic Renaissance Revival exterior with modern interventions. A signature addition is the redesigned walk-in glass dome above the plenary chamber, which has become a landmark of contemporary Berlin.
