The Residencia de Estudiantes in Madrid, founded in 1910, is a neo-Mudéjar cultural centre designed to house students following the model of venerable European colleges at Bologna, Salamanca, Cambridge, and Oxford. It became one of interwar Europe's most significant institutions for intellectual and artistic exchange, nurturing Spain's brightest minds across disciplines. Its residents and visitors included luminaries such as Salvador Dalí, Luis Buñuel, and Federico García Lorca among the students, while distinguished speakers ranged from Marie Curie and Albert Einstein to the writers Juan Ramón Jiménez and Rafael Alberti. Activities ceased during the Spanish Civil War, after which the institution was integrated into the Spanish National Research Council as a guest house. Since Spain's democratic transition, the Residencia has been revitalized as a monument and creative residency, now recognized as a bien de interés cultural.
