The Hermitage of Restelo, also known as the Chapel of Saint Jerome, stands in the Belém district of Lisbon as a modest yet architecturally significant religious structure. Built in the Manueline style characteristic of Portuguese late medieval design, the hermitage features a single-nave interior crowned by a vaulted ceiling. The structure incorporates both authentic Manueline elements and revivalist Neo-Manueline touches, reflecting its layered architectural history. The hermitage is surrounded by a carefully curated modernist landscape, designed by Gonçalo Ribeiro, with thoughtfully selected plantings and manicured grounds that create a protective environmental envelope around the chapel. Designated a National Monument of Portugal, it remains an important example of Lisbon's religious heritage.
