The Rhode Island State House, located at 82 Smith Street in Providence, is a neoclassical capitol building designed by the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White and completed in 1904. Its most distinctive feature is the fourth largest structural-stone dome in the world, crowned by a gilded statue of The Independent Man symbolizing freedom and independence. The building houses the Rhode Island General Assembly, with the House of Representatives in the west wing and the Senate in the east, alongside the offices of the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, and general treasurer. The structure was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.
