Located on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia, the Richards Medical Research Laboratories represent a breakthrough in Louis Kahn's career. The building is organized as a cluster of laboratory towers surrounding a central service tower, with brick peripheral shafts housing stairwells and air ducts that evoke the ancient Italian towers Kahn had studied and painted years earlier. Rather than concealing its structural system, the building showcases a clearly visible reinforced concrete frame that openly expresses its load-bearing role, constructed from precisely formed prefabricated elements that advanced concrete construction techniques. The design's articulation of served and servant spaces and its dialogue with historical architectural forms helped establish new directions in modern architecture. Together with the associated Goddard Laboratories, also designed by Kahn, the building has been designated a National Historic Landmark.
