Rockwood Academy, a private school established in 1850 by Quaker William Wetherald in Rockwood, Ontario, operated until 1883, when competition from newly founded provincial collegiate institutes eroded demand for independent education. Its three-storey limestone building, erected in 1853 and designed in the Georgian architectural style, remains standing at 477 Main Street South. Now designated a heritage property under Ontario's Part IV Heritage designation and held by the Ontario Heritage Trust, the structure testifies to the era of private schooling that preceded public secondary education in the region.
