In downtown Amman, Jordan, Roman thermae were discovered in 2020 during construction of an underground rainwater drainage system. The excavation unearthed two Roman statues and ceramics spanning multiple periods—Roman, Byzantine, Umayyad, and Ottoman—suggesting the site's long occupation. Due to limited funding, the ruins were carefully reburied using silica-rich sand to preserve them for future archaeological work. The discovery raised intriguing questions about additional buried antiquities beneath Amman's modern downtown.
