The Royal Palace of Cambodia in Phnom Penh is the official royal residence of the Cambodian monarch, built beginning in 1866 under King Norodom. Constructed between 1866 and 1870, the original palace was largely demolished and rebuilt in two phases from 1912 to 1932. Designed in the Khmer architectural style, the complex sits on the western bank of Chaktomuk, the confluence of the Tonle Sap River and the Mekong River. The kings of Cambodia have occupied the palace continuously since its founding, with the exception of a period of absence during and after the Khmer Rouge era, when the country experienced severe turmoil.
