The Royal Theatre of La Monnaie is Belgium's principal opera house, located on the Place de la Monnaie in central Brussels and home to the National Opera of Belgium. The current building—the third theatre to occupy the site—began with a neoclassical façade erected in 1818, substantially altered in 1856 and again in 1986. Its foyer and auditorium date from the mid-nineteenth-century renovations, while the architects Louis-Emmanuel-Aimé Damesme and Joseph Poelaert shaped the structure's evolution. Nearly every element of the present building beyond the foyer and auditorium underwent extensive renovation during the 1980s, incorporating postmodern interventions into the neoclassical framework. As one of Belgium's few cultural institutions receiving direct federal funding, La Monnaie remains a protected monument and major venue served by multiple metro and premetro lines.
