Rudkhan Castle, a brick and stone medieval fortress 25 kilometers southwest of Fuman in Iran's Gilan province, originated during the Sasanian era (224–651) as a defensive position against Arab invaders following the fall of the Sasanian Empire. The site was rebuilt in 1096 by the Nizari Isma'ilis for use by the Assassins. Spanning 2.6 hectares across two mountain peaks at elevations of 715 and 670 meters, the military complex features 1,550 meters of strong fortifications and battlements. The castle's architecture reflects successive periods of construction and occupation, incorporating Sasanian, Seljuk, Nizari, and Safavid elements. The Rudkhan Castle River flows through the surrounding heights from south to north, contributing to the fortress's strategic location in the historically contested Tabarestan region.
