Saghmosavank is a 13th-century Armenian monastic complex perched above the Kasagh river gorge in the village of Saghmosavan, Aragatsotn Province. Built by Prince Vache Vachutyan, its Church of Zion (1215) exemplifies the Armenian cross-winged domed structure with two-story corner annexes characteristic of the period, its interior dominated by subcupola space that shapes the building's exterior form. The attached zhamatun was added by Vache Vachutyan's son Kurt in 1255. Like the nearby Hovhannavank monastery five kilometers south, Saghmosavank's silhouette rises dramatically against the mountains crowned by Mount Aragats, commanding the landscape of the region.
