Noravank is a 13th-century Armenian monastery built in 1250 near Yeghegnadzor, located 122 kilometers from Yerevan in a narrow gorge carved by the Amaghu River. The architects Siranes and Momik designed the structure in Armenian architectural style. The monastery is distinguished by its two-storey Surb Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother of God) Church, featuring a distinctive narrow stone staircase projecting from the building's face to access the upper floor. Set against dramatic brick-red cliffs, the site became a residence of Syunik's bishops in the 13th and 14th centuries, transforming it into a major religious and cultural center of Armenia with strong intellectual connections to nearby Gladzor's renowned university and library.
