Sakai City Museum, designed by Nikken Sekkei and opened in 1980 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of Sakai's municipalization, is situated within Daisen Park in Sakai-ku, Osaka Prefecture. The museum's approximately 1,330-square-meter exhibition hall is organized chronologically into sections covering ancient times through the modern era, showcasing Sakai's evolution from a significant autonomous trading city to the present day. Holdings include artifacts from the Mozu Kofun Group—notably the Emperor Nintoku Tumulus, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group inscribed in 2019—as well as trade goods, historical documents, and materials related to notable Sakai-born figures such as Gyōki and Sen-no Rikyū. The museum shares its location within the kofun group with several cultural institutions, including the Sakai Municipal Library and Sakai Bicycle Museum, and hosts the International Research Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage in Asia-Pacific Region, which established its office there in 2011.
