The Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia in Sparta was one of ancient Greece's most important religious sites, dedicated to the goddess Artemis from Archaic times onward. Originally established as an Archaic site, it remained active throughout the Classical period and beyond, continuing to function until the fourth century CE, when pagan worship was suppressed during the late Roman Empire. The sanctuary was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times over centuries of use. Excavations have yielded numerous artifacts illuminating the rituals performed there, which involved both young boys and girls in varying ceremonial practices, and have provided invaluable evidence for understanding religious behavior and cult activities at the temple during its long period of use.
