The Sassi di Matera are two ancient districts of the southern Italian city of Matera, comprising rock-cut dwellings carved into the landscape and inhabited continuously since the Paleolithic period. The two quarters—Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano—form a distinctive architectural ensemble of cave homes integrated into the natural geology, creating what Fodor's has termed "one of the most unique landscapes in Europe." Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993 alongside the nearby park of Rupestrian Churches, the Sassi represent an exceptional survival of prehistoric settlement practices adapted to a rocky terrain, their ancient character preserved across millennia of human habitation.
