In Wessington Springs, South Dakota, the Shakespeare Garden and Anne Hathaway Cottage is a Tudor Revival recreation inspired by the original Anne Hathaway's Cottage in England. Emma Shay completed the adjoining Shakespeare garden in 1927 and the house itself in 1932, drawing on impressions from a vacation abroad. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 for its distinctive architecture, the property represents one of the few examples of a twentieth-century formal garden in South Dakota. Today it functions as a public tourist attraction and event venue.
