Built in 1822 by Carl Ludvig Engel in Helsinki's Kaartinkaupunki district, the Smolna is an Empire style administrative building that serves the Finnish Government as a banquet hall and reception space for visiting dignitaries and official negotiations. The structure is protected under Finnish Decree 480/85. In recent years, it has temporarily housed government headquarters during renovations of the Government Palace, with additional administrative functions relocated to an adjacent building at Eteläesplanadi 4.
