The Spandau Citadel is a Renaissance fortress on an island near the confluence of the Havel and Spree rivers in Berlin, built between 1559 and 1594 atop a medieval fort. Designed by Francesco Chiaramella de Gandino and Rocco Guerrini to defend the town of Spandau, it stands as one of Europe's best-preserved Renaissance military structures. Today the citadel functions as a museum and tourist destination, while its inner courtyard serves as an open-air concert venue during the summer months.
