Špilberk Castle rises from a hilltop in Brno, Southern Moravia, its origins tracing to construction begun in the first half of the 13th century by the Přemyslid kings and completed by King Ottokar II of Bohemia. Evolving from a major royal seat of the Moravian margraves in the mid-14th century, the fortress was gradually transformed into a massive baroque citadel that became notorious as one of the harshest prisons in the Austrian Empire before later serving as barracks. Its architecture blends Gothic and baroque styles, reflecting centuries of reconstruction and adaptation. The fortress's prison gained literary fame through Stendhal's *The Charterhouse of Parma*, where it features prominently in the protagonist's narrative. Today recognized as a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic, Špilberk stands as a palimpsest of medieval royal power and imperial state control.
