Singapore's oldest and first Hindu temple, the Sri Mariamman Temple stands in Chinatown on South Bridge Road, built in the Dravidian architectural style. Founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, a government clerk and businessman who arrived with Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, the temple was established just eight years after the East India Company's initial trading settlement. An agamic temple primarily serving Tamil Hindus, it has become a major tourist attraction and was gazetted as a National Monument in recognition of its architectural and historical importance. Today it operates under the management of the Hindu Endowments Board.
