St Ann's Church stands within His Majesty's Naval Base Portsmouth as the spiritual home of the Royal Navy, housing memorials to countless men lost at sea. The present Georgian structure, opened in 1786, was built in red brick laid in Flemish bond, possibly designed by Marquand, a Navy Board surveyor working under Samuel Wyatt, with contractors Thomas Parlby & Sons executing the work. The oldest surviving chapel in a navy yard, it replaced an earlier church from 1704 that stood on the site of what is now Admiralty House. The building sustained bomb damage in May 1941 but was restored in 1955–6. Grade II listed since 1972, St Ann's continues to serve as a focal point for naval commemoration, hosting annual remembrance ceremonies including those for HMS Royal Oak, sunk in 1939.
