St. Gregory the Illuminator's Church stands near Fountains Square in central Baku, designed by architect Karl Gustav Hippius in the Armenian architectural tradition. Completed in 1869, this Armenian Apostolic church was one of only two Armenian churches in Baku to survive the Soviet anti-religious campaign, the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and the 1990 pogrom and exodus of Armenian residents, though it was looted during that period. Now the only standing Armenian monument in the city, the church remains designated as a cultural heritage monument in Azerbaijan.
